Internet in Indonesia for travellers: which eSIM to choose
Bali, Java or Lombok: the same plan works across the whole country. Two ways to take data with you: a data plan, or unlimited with 2 GB a day.
Which plan suits your trip length
| Trip | Data plan | Unlimited |
|---|---|---|
| 3 days | 1 GB · €3.95 | €9.95 |
| 7 days | 10 GB · €10.95 | €19.95 |
| 15 days | 20 GB · €17.95 | €36.95 |
| 30 days | 50 GB · €34.95 | €64.95 |
Prices include VAT and match the Indonesia page. Validity: the 1 GB plan, 7 days; 3 to 50 GB, 30 days.
For two or three weeks in Bali, the 20 GB or 50 GB plans usually work out better than unlimited. Check your own case.
When unlimited pays off and when it doesn't
A week of unlimited data costs €19.95. For less, you get 20 GB (€17.95) to spread however you like, with no daily cap.
- Normal use: a data plan. Maps, messaging, photos and social media fit comfortably into 10 GB for a week.
- Video, long video calls or shared data: unlimited. You get 2 GB at full speed again every day.
- Month-long stays: 50 GB for €34.95 against €64.95 for unlimited. If you're working remotely from Bali, do the maths carefully first.
What exactly the unlimited plan includes
2 GB a day at full speed and, once that's used, 1 Mbps until the next day.
As with every other destination, the allowance and the speed afterwards are on the plan card before you pay. For the background, see the truth about "unlimited" plans.
Where your traffic exits
In Indonesia, your traffic exits in Singapore.
It's a nearby exit, but not a local one: some websites will see you in Singapore. For normal phone use nothing changes; the language a website greets you in or a search engine's local results may change.
The daily plan we sell here is precisely the one that doesn't route traffic out through Hong Kong, for the reasons we explain on the unlimited plans page.
The network is 4G/5G, depending on the area and your phone.
How to activate it
- Install it at home, on Wi-Fi. Installing doesn't use data or start the clock.
- When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line.
- The days start with the first connection to an Indonesian network.
Steps for each model are in the installation guide; for compatibility, use the checker.
Frequently asked questions about internet in Indonesia
Does it work in Bali?
Yes: the plan covers the whole country, Bali included.
Do I keep my number and WhatsApp?
Yes. The eSIM is data-only and your usual SIM stays in your phone.
Does it work if I carry on to Thailand or Vietnam?
No: this plan covers Indonesia only. For several countries, look at the Asia eSIM or the worldwide eSIM.
What happens when I use up the day's 2 GB?
You drop to 1 Mbps until the next day.
Can I top up if I run short?
Not currently: you'd need to buy another plan.
