How do I install and activate the Japan eSIM?

With the QR code we email you instantly: scan it from your phone’s settings and the eSIM is installed. When you land, turn on data roaming for that line (that’s normal and costs nothing extra).

When does the plan start?

When the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you buy or install it. The plan’s days count from then (7 to 30 days).

Is there a fair usage policy?

Only on the unlimited GB plan: 2 GB a day at full speed, then up to 256 Kbps. GB plans have no daily cap.

Can I top it up?

Yes. GB plans can be topped up from My eSIM with “Add data”, with nothing new to install.

Is it cheaper than Holafly, Saily, Airalo, or Nomad?

If you use less than 20 GB in a week, Glowi is cheaper. If you really will use more, or you’d rather not count gigabytes, Holafly makes sense.

Glowi costs less than Saily, Airalo and Nomad in 4 of 5 plans.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to set up the APN to use it in Japan?

The APN for the Japan eSIM is “vmobile.jp”. You only need to enter it if your phone doesn’t connect when you arrive: on Android, Settings → Mobile networks → Access Point Names; on iPhone, Settings → Mobile Data → Mobile Data Network.

Does the Japan eSIM also work in other countries?

No: it only works in Japan. If your trip continues to other countries, the Asia (19 countries) and Global (117 countries) packs also work in Japan.

Can I install it before I travel?

Yes, and it’s the easiest way: on your home Wi-Fi. Installing it uses no data and doesn’t start the plan, which starts counting when the eSIM first connects to a network. Keep the line turned off until you arrive. You have 180 days from purchase to activate it; if you don’t activate it in that time, it expires and can’t be refunded or topped up.
