Internet in Mexico for travellers: which eSIM to choose

For Mexico we sell plans by the gigabyte, with no daily cap: you choose the amount and use it at your own pace within the validity period. Here's which one fits each kind of trip.

Prices include VAT and match the Mexico plan page. There's also 1 GB for €4.95 (7 days). The largest plan is 20 GB, at €48.95.

If your trip mixes city and beach and you use maps every day, allow for more than you think: work it out in two minutes.

How many GB is enough?

It mostly depends on whether you watch video on your phone and whether automatic photo backup is switched on, which is what eats through a plan without anyone noticing.

  • Maps, messaging and the odd search: a one-week trip uses very little.
  • Normal use with social media and music: the range widens quite a bit, and that's where 5 or 10 GB make sense.
  • Video or video calls every day: go for the big plan without a second thought.

The ranges, with figures, are in how much data a trip uses.

Compared with an "unlimited" plan

Holafly sells an unlimited data plan for Mexico: €22.50 for 7 days and €60.50 for 30 days.

Our 10 GB plan for 30 days costs €27.95, and the 5 GB plan €16.95. If your use is light or moderate, paying by the gigabyte works out cheaper; if you'll use a lot every day, an unlimited plan may be worth it, and it's worth checking its daily allowance before you decide. The full comparison, duration by duration, is in Glowi vs Holafly in Mexico.

Where your traffic exits

In Mexico, your traffic exits via Singapore.

In practice, you'll notice that some websites see you as connecting from there: the language they greet you in or a search engine's local results may change. For maps, messaging, social media and video, nothing changes. We say so on the plan page, before you buy, because some people need to know.

The network is 5G, with whatever coverage each area has.

How to activate it

  1. Install it at home, on Wi-Fi. Installing uses no plan data and doesn't start the clock.
  2. When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line.
  3. The days start counting from your first connection to a Mexican network, not when you buy.

Steps for each phone model are in the installation guide; if you're not sure about your phone, check the compatibility checker.

Frequently asked questions about internet in Mexico

Do I keep my number and WhatsApp?

Yes. The eSIM is data only and your usual SIM stays in the phone with your number for calls and texts.

Does the same plan work if I cross into another country?

No: the Mexico plan covers Mexico. For several countries, look at the regional eSIMs.

What if I run out of data?

At the moment you can't top up on the website: you buy another plan for the destination. We explain it in what happens when your data runs out.

Do I need to set anything else up?

Only data roaming on the eSIM line. On some Android phones you have to enter the APN by hand; the right one is on the plan page.

Our recommendation for two weeks in Mexico
