Internet in Morocco for travellers: which eSIM to choose

It's one of the destinations where an eSIM makes the most difference: it's close to Europe but outside the European Union, and that's where surprise bills turn up. Here's which plan fits each kind of trip.

Which plan suits you, by trip length

TripPlanPrice
Weekend3 GB · 30 days€8.95
One week5 GB · 30 days€11.95
Two weeks10 GB · 30 days€18.95
A month or heavy use20 GB · 30 days€31.95

Prices include VAT and match the Morocco plan page. There's also 1 GB for €4.95 (7 days) and 50 GB for €56.95.

For a short break in Marrakech or Fez with maps and messaging, 3 GB is plenty. Work it out in two minutes.

How many GB is enough?

What decides it isn't the number of days but how you use your phone: video and automatic photo backup use more than everything else put together.

  • Maps, messaging and looking up places: a week uses very little.
  • Add social media and music: that's where 5 or 10 GB start to make sense.
  • Video or video calls every day: go for the big plan.

The ranges, with figures, are in how much data a trip uses.

Compared with an "unlimited" plan

Holafly sells an unlimited data plan for Morocco: €28.90 for 7 days and €78.90 for 30 days.

Our 10 GB plan for 30 days costs €18.95, and the 5 GB plan €11.95. For light or moderate use the difference is large and in our favour; if you'll use a lot every day, check the unlimited plan's daily allowance before you decide, because they all have one. The full table, duration by duration, is in Glowi vs Holafly in Morocco.

Where your traffic exits

In Morocco, your traffic exits via Europe.

Some websites will see you as connecting from a European country: the language they greet you in or a search engine's local results may change. For maps, messaging, social media and video, nothing changes. We say so on the plan page, before you buy.

The network is 5G, with whatever coverage each area has. Outside the cities and on desert routes, as with any operator, there are stretches with no signal: download your maps before you set off.

How to activate it

  1. Install it at home, on Wi-Fi. Installing uses no plan data and doesn't start the clock.
  2. When you arrive, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line.
  3. The days start counting from your first connection to a Moroccan network, not when you buy.

Steps for each phone model are in the installation guide; if you're not sure about your phone, check the compatibility checker.

Frequently asked questions about internet in Morocco

Do I keep my number and WhatsApp?

Yes. The eSIM is data only and your usual SIM stays in the phone with your number for calls and texts.

It's so close to Europe. Won't my usual mobile plan cover it?

Morocco isn't in the European Union, so your plan's terms there may be very different, even if your plan is from an EU country. Check your contract before you travel: we explain it in eSIM or roaming.

What if I run out of data?

At the moment you can't top up on the website: you buy another plan for the destination. We explain it in what happens when your data runs out.

Do I need to set anything else up?

Only data roaming on the eSIM line. On some Android phones you have to enter the APN by hand; the right one is on the plan page.

Our recommendation for a week in Morocco
