Internet in Turkey for travellers: which eSIM to choose

Turkey is one of our cheapest destinations, whichever way you buy: by the GB or with the unlimited GB plan of 3 GB a day. Here are the numbers to help you choose.

When unlimited is worth it, and when it isn’t

A week of unlimited GB costs €17.95. For less than that, a plan by the GB gets you 20 GB (€14.95), which is almost 3 GB a day.

  • With normal use, a plan by the GB works out better. And whatever you don’t use one day carries over to the next: there’s no daily cap.
  • Unlimited is worth it if you’ll watch a lot of video, share data or work from your phone, and would rather not keep count.
  • For a month, the 50 GB plan costs €33.95 and unlimited €54.95. On top of that, the 50 GB are valid for 180 days, so they can cover more than one trip.

What unlimited includes in Turkey, exactly

It gives you 3 GB a day at full speed. Once you’ve used that allowance you stay connected at 1 Mbps until the next day, when the allowance starts again.

At 1 Mbps you can still use messaging, maps and browsing; high-quality video no longer runs smoothly. We write it on the plan card, next to the price, because that’s the difference between a genuine “unlimited” plan and one with small print. We explain it all in the truth about “unlimited” data.

Where your traffic goes out

In Turkey, your traffic goes out through the Netherlands.

That means some websites and apps will see you as if you were there: the language they greet you in or a search engine’s local results may change, and your bank may ask for an extra confirmation. For maps, messaging, social media and video, nothing changes. We say so here, and it’s also on the destination page before you buy.

The network in Turkey is 5G, with whatever coverage each area has.

How to activate it: install before you go, switch on when you land

  1. Install it at home, on wifi. It doesn’t use data or start counting the days.
  2. When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line.
  3. The days start with your first connection to a Turkish network.

The exact steps are in the installation guide. And if you’re not sure about your phone, the compatibility checker will tell you in a minute.

Frequently asked questions about internet in Turkey

Do I keep my usual number?

Yes. The eSIM is data-only and your usual SIM stays in the phone with your number; WhatsApp works as normal.

Do the days start when I buy?

No: they start with your first connection to a network at your destination. You can buy weeks in advance and install it at home without any rush.

Will I be cut off after the day’s 3 GB?

No. It drops to 1 Mbps until the next day.

Which plan gives the most for your money?

The 50 GB plan, at €33.95, which is also valid for 180 days. For an ordinary week, the 10 GB plan for €8.95 is the most popular choice.

What if I run out of data?

There’s no top-up on the website at the moment: you would need to buy another plan. So if in doubt, the bigger size pays off.
