eSIM for a cruise
Data in every port with one eSIM. Before you buy, the most important thing: there’s no coverage at sea.
At sea the eSIM has no coverage
The eSIM works on land and near the coast, on the mobile networks of whichever country the ship is in. At sea there are no masts: there you’ll only have the ship’s WiFi or the cruise’s maritime mobile network, which is charged separately and tends to be expensive.
So that your usual line doesn’t connect to that maritime network by mistake, keep its data roaming turned off while you’re sailing.
Which pack suits your route
- Mediterranean: Europe pack. It covers Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Malta, Cyprus, Slovenia, and Gibraltar. It doesn’t cover Turkey, Montenegro, Albania, Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt: if the cruise stops there, for those days you need that country’s eSIM.
- Caribbean: Americas pack, with care. Of the Caribbean islands, it only covers Puerto Rico, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Barthelemy, and Saint Martin. The Bahamas, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, the Cayman Islands, Antigua and Barbuda, Aruba, Curaçao, Barbados, Saint Lucia, the Turks and Caicos Islands, Saint Kitts and Nevis, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago are not in the pack: for those stops you need each country’s eSIM.
Do you need it?
It’s no use on board: there you only have the ship’s WiFi or its maritime network.
If your tariff is from an EU country and the cruise only stops at EU ports, EU roaming covers you and you may not need it. It’s worth it if there are stops outside the EU, if your tariff includes few GB for roaming or if you’re not from the EU.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work on the ship?
Only near the coast, when your phone can reach the country’s networks. At sea there’s no coverage: all that’s left is the ship’s WiFi or its maritime network, which is charged separately.
When does the plan start counting?
When the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination. Installing it at home doesn’t use up any days.
What if the cruise stops in a country the pack doesn’t cover?
For those days you need that country’s eSIM. Each one starts counting at its own destination, so you can have both installed.
